The Epsom Derby takes place each year on Epsom Downs in the heart of the Surrey countryside some 20 miles from Central London and thought of by many as one of the greatest flat horse racing races of them all.
The horseracing takes place over two days. Starting with Ladies Day on Friday combining Glamour, fascinators, fancy frocks and fizz! With many competing for the title of’ Best Dressed Lady’ the first race, The Princess Elizabeth Stakes, starts at 14:00 pm.
Then, on the Saturday, the Epsom Derby itself begins. With horseracing commencing from 14:00 pm, with “The Investec Out of The Ordinary” and the main event the Investec Derby at 16:30 pm
The first Derby horse race was held on 14th May 1779 and named after Lord Derby’s house. The horserace was a great success and as a result, another new race for both colts and fillies was planned for the following year.
Over the years the Epsom racecourse has been modernised to provide race goers with first class facilities notable improvements have included The Queen’s Stand a large coloured screen on the home straight; and most recently, the Duchess’s Stand was opened by The Duchess of Cornwall in 2009. And in 2010 a 120 bedroom hotel Holiday Inn Express, opened on the site of the old paddock, allowing for the convenience of an overnight stay at the Epsom Derby.
There is nothing quite like a day out at the races. As well as being part of the spectacle and seeing the horseracing, there is always time for a little flutter. You never know your horse may come home first!
